KIM SCHAVEL
I am a pickleball teaching professional certified by the IPTPA , Director of the Oceanside Junior Pickleball Academy, and Team Selkirk sponsored 5.0 rated player. Having played sports all my life, particularly softball, I was introduced to pickleball at Melba Bishop and was hooked. During that time, there weren’t many teaching professionals or clinics, so I had to learn the game by observing. It has taken hard work, perseverance, and dedication to earn my 5.0 skill level. I have competed in many tournaments in both singles and doubles, winning many medals. I love this sport and I’m very passionate about it. My desire is to give back to the game that has given me so much. I believe I can achieve this by teaching the fundamentals, correct shot selections, and strategies of pickleball so that others can have the opportunity to develop their skills. I’m thankful to be able to teach at my home courts, Melba Bishop.

LEO NEWSOM
Leo is a teaching professional certified by the IPTPA. He began by helping with the clinics at Melba and immediately fell in love with coaching again. When an opportunity to help out more came, he jumped on it and got certified so that he could give the best coaching possible. Since then he has made himself useful in many ways including revamping the junior program, starting a fundamentals class, and a class centered around new players. Leo and his wife enjoy traveling, playing in pickleball tournaments, and playing socially. A part of every vacation is spent playing somewhere with new friends. Leo coached cheerleading and gymnastics growing up and was also the director of an after school enrichment program. His love for coaching and watching his athletes progress has always been a highlight in his life. Leo loves being able to help people refine their skills with kind observations, smiles, and a welcoming atmosphere. Leo grew up in Carlsbad playing many sports and loves to draw from and create coaching cues and experiences from them all. Leo feels so blessed to be a part of the Melba Bishop pickleball community.
